This tour will explore the history of Africans- and people of African descent in New Orleans. We'll begin in Africa with the "Voyage of No Return" and the arrival and treatment of enslaved Africans once here. Kids will learn about the largest slave market in the country. They'll also hear about the laws related to the treatment and freedom of slaves. We'll talk about how the system of slavery differed in Louisiana from the laws and attitudes in the 13 colonies. And, of course, we'll talk about children. Enslaved children and their day to day lives in a Catholic, Creole city.
This tour is an introduction and overview; it is not intended as a means of summing up a rich history in an hour.
It is designed for kids between 8 and 14 years old, those with an interest in history. This tour is excellent for those families / students looking for a deeper understanding of how New Orleans became the most unique city in America.
