Ancient Empires

Louisiana just changed the social studies standards!! Don't worry. We are here to support this new venture. On our uptown Ancient Empires field trip, students will explore Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome- noticing their influence on architecture, food, government- and yes, even Mardi Gras! (And Fornite....) This field trip will teach kids who, what, where, when, and why is this important today?? Whether we're having our own breakdancing competition like the Olympics 2024 or dining on bread and olives (as Juvenal suggested would calm the masses), we're staying true to history and making it fun for kids!

The Field Trip

All of our tours are teacher led, hands on, and interactive! We'll teach the information as it happened chronologically- not hopping around and jumbling information. We'll start with the Ancient Greeks- talk about their polytheistic beliefs, the beginning of the Olympics (and how it was quite different from today!!), the different architectural styles still seen in New Orleans! (Greek Revival is ALL OVER uptown!!)

Then kids will dig into the Ancient Roman Empire. We'll talk about the gladiators and what happened in the Coliseum. We'll talk about Roman society, comparing it to old Louisiana. The majority of people living in the Ancient Roman Empire were enslaved or poor plebeians. So how do we stop them from rebelling? Kids will taste what the Romans tried.

Then we'll return to Louisiana, looking at the Greek influence on Mardi Gras parade themes, architecture, our representative democracy. Of course, we know that kids like the strange but true facts so we'll pack plenty of those icky nuggets in there too!! (Public baths?? Public restrooms?? eek!)
